Logistics

The Potsdam Summer School 2014 will primarily be conducted at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS). In addition three days will be held on the Albert Einstein Campus and one day at the University of Potsdam.

Photographs and film footage may be taken during this event, which may or may not include your recognizable image or a video. By participating in this event, you consent to being photographed or filmed and authorize the university to use the photographs or film in print, digital, video or web-based format for its promotional and archival purposes.

Check-In

Check-in will be available from 2:00 p.m. If you arrive earlier and your room is ready, the hotel will be able to accommodate you. If not, you may leave your luggage at the front desk and go for a little stroll to explore charming Potsdam.

Registration desk 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

We will have a registration desk set up in the hotel lobby from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22.

Welcome reception & dinner 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

We will have a reception and welcome dinner starting at 07:30 p.m. Instructions about how to get there will be given upon arrival.


Public transportation

For ground transport you will need a single fare ticket for the zones ABC (€ 3,20). You can obtain it either from a ticket machine outside the airport or from the counter inside the airport. You can also purchase a ticket from the bus driver. When you buy it from a ticket machine, please make sure to validate it by stamping (red box, next to the ticket machine) or on the bus.

From Potsdam Central Station

Take tram 92 or 96 to the Nauener Tor stop. The NH Voltaire Potsdam will be right across the street.

From the airports

From Berlin-Tegel Airport:
By public transportation: Take the X9 bus to Zoologischer Garten and transfer to the regional train RE 1 (platform 4) towards Potsdam Central Station. From here take tram 92 (direction Bornstedt/Kirschallee) or tram 96 (direction Bornstedter Feld/Viereckremise) to the Nauener Tor stop. The NH Voltaire Potsdam will be right across the street.

From Berlin-Schoenefeld Airport:
By public transportation: Take the S45 suburban train to Westkreuz and transfer to the S7 suburban train towards Berlin-Wannsee (final stop) Change onto the line S1 to Potsdam Central Station (final stop) and take tram 92 (direction Bornstedt/Kirschallee) or tram 96 (direction Bornstedter Feld/Viereckremise) to the Nauener Tor stop. The NH Voltaire Potsdam will be right across the street.

From Berlin Central Station:
Take the regional train RE 1 to Potsdam Central Station and take tram 92 (direction Bornstedt/Kirschallee) or tram 96 (direction Bornstedter Feld/Viereckremise) to the Nauener Tor stop. The NH Voltaire Potsdam will be right across the street.

From Berlin Central Station, alternatively:
Take the S7 suburban train towards Berlin-Wannsee (final stop) Change onto the line S1 to Potsdam Central Station (final stop) and take tram 92 (direction Bornstedt/Kirschallee) or tram 96 (direction Bornstedter Feld/Viereckremise) to the Nauener Tor stop. Programme Format

The school consists mainly of lectures and small group meetings/project work. There will be a public event on Monday June 30 in Potsdam. Lectures and workshops will be held at the IASS with the exception of Tuesday June 24 until Thursday June 26 when they will be held on Albert Einstein Campus (Haus H). Additionally Monday, June 30 will be spent at the University of Potsdam. Most of the lectures are scheduled in the mornings or early afternoons. Please note that group projects are a major part of the school; for details, please see the “programme”.


Programme Expectations

We expect that participants will attend all lectures for the full duration of the programme, participate fully in a group project, and fulfill all related assignments and deadlines. You should expect to spend some amount of time working on your group projects outside of the scheduled sessions. Participants who do not meet these requirements may be asked to leave the programme at the discretion of the directors. Dress is casual with the exception of the evening of Wednesday, June 25 (reception with the Mayor of Potsdam) and the public event on Monday, June 30.

Some lecturers might provide pre-readings. You will find the links with each individual speaker (where available)


Accomodation/Meals

All participants will be assigned to single rooms at Hotel NH Voltaire Potsdam. All rooms will have free WIFI access. For safety and contractual reasons you may not have overnight guests in your hotel room. Participants are responsible for expenses accrued to their account such as long-distance telephone charges, beverages, and room service. Meals begin with a dinner on Sunday, June 22 and end with breakfast on Saturday, July 05. During the Potsdam Summer School the organizers will cover for lunches and dinners except for the weekend and the dinners on June 25, June 27 and July 02. Breakfast will be included at no extra cost for the participants and will be served at the hotel. Please inform the hotel staff if you have any dietary requirements. Please, make sure that you are at the summer school venue by 08:45 since we shall start our lectures at 09:00! Lunch will be served from 12:30-14:00 at the premises of the IASS or respectively in Haus H on Albert Einstein Campus (June 24-June 26) and University of Potsdam (June 30). Dinner times will vary according to the programme.


Health Insurance

All participants have to organize for their own health insurance during the Potsdam Summer School.


Ex Curriculum

Apart from our summer school programme we will organize some other activities. More details on this will follow successively. Potsdam is a charming place and has lots of attractive sites and your hotel is located right in the middle of the historic Dutch Quarter. The town is also surrounded by lovely lakes. So be sure to bring swim gear, sunglasses and sunscreen with you!


Computer Facilities

Free WIFI will be available in the hotel, at IASS on Albert Einstein Campus and the University of Potsdam.


Local Transportation

We will provide tickets for all public transport in Potsdam during your entire stay. But please note that these are only valid for Potsdam and not for travelling to Berlin.
