Previously he has served as Technical Advisor on Environment and Climate Change issues at the Executive Office of the Brazilian Presidency (Casa Civil). Andre also had a very sound experience at the Brazilian Forest Service, where he served as Forestry Planning Manager having delivered four Annual Plans for Forest Concessions, developed an intelligence unit on forest economics and created an national context of monographies on forest economy called “Prêmio SFB em estudos de economia e mercado florestal”.

is a passionate Marine Scientist, Ocean Explorer, and Educator specializing in Climate Change and Marine Pollution. She has participated in many worldwide oceanographic cruises, doing scientific research focused on Climate Change. These excursions have motivated her to communicate her experiences through educational programs that make people aware of this global problem. In 2015, Valentina and her students developed “The Climate Change Challenge,” a virtual campaign focused on increasing awareness of Climate Change and Ocean Acidification worldwide, leading up to the COP 21 Summit in Paris (http://globalclimatechangechallenge.com/). I am a PhD student on Atmospheric Sciences at the National University of Buenos Aires and belong to the Argentine Antarctic Institute - INSTITUTO ANTÁRTICO ARGENTINO - the scientific institution affiliated to the Argentine Antarctic National Program. My PhD research is focused on Antarctic Peninsula Climate Change. I study, through climate models, the observed changes on climate over this region - a critical one since it is the region all over the world with the largest observed warming during the last decades, after the Arctic - and compare it with those expected for next decades.

I also belong to APECS Argentina - the argentine subsidiary of APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists), and to Sustentabilidad Sin Fronteras (Sustainability Without Frontiers), an NGO focused on Sustainability and Climate Change.

I am a biomedical chemist by training and now doing a PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. Therein, I am trying to better understand the impact of ambient ultrafine particles on human health. Beyond my scientific research I am involved in science policy by serving as spokesperson of Max Planck PhDnet. By this, I am trying to improve the status of early career scientists in the Max Planck Society and beyond. Coming to the Potsdam Summer school 2019 I hope to get to know many people, who are just like me enthusiastic about using science to improve societies.

I have a PhD in Physics. I worked for 10 years in atomic spectroscopy, implementing the LIBS technique (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) in different types of plant samples with the objective of detecting heavy metals. Between 2016 and 2019 I was a postdoctoral fellow of CONICET, doing research in public science communication and museology. During this period I completed the Specialization in Public Communication of Science and Technology at the University of Buenos Aires.

I am doing my Masters in Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Netherlands at the University of Groningen. I am specializing in the field of Environmental Psychology and my interest lies in variables that influence individuals’ pro-environmental behavior. Parts of my research deal with how human values influence acceptability of different energy sources. In another project, I work on a literature review on the acceptability of energy system scenarios and their likelihood to induce behavior change that we will need to achieve the global climate targets. This aims to inform the chapter on energy systems in the next IPCC report, AR6, focusing on the social aspects relevant for changes in the energy system.

Hei! I am Tobias, born 1988 and raised in Halle/Saale (central Germany). After a gap year abroad, I stepwise moved up to Northern Germany for my Bachelor (Bremen University) and Master (Kiel University) studies in chemistry. Even though the stone’s throw to the Baltic Sea is already worth the stay, the decision to end up in Kiel was motivated for ocean sciences: I am a sea-going chemical oceanographer at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. My doctoral research project focuses on novel optical oxygen sensors and the air-sea gas exchange of O2 and CO2. In my spare time, I enjoy biking, running, playing football and being outside, best linked with sustainable behaviour. Currently, I am doing my PhD at the AI Lab at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. My research is driven by the idea of a confident and sustainable cooperation of humans and artificial intelligence (AI), which will facilitate solving large-scale global challenges in society and economy. I then worked on various major infrastructure projects, based in Texas, and now find myself studying space engineering in Berlin. My name is Berit (Bee) and I consider myself as a global citizen. Born in Germany, brought up bilingual attending a Danish highschool, did my undergraduate in Geology and Environmental Science through the University of Wellington in New Zealand and am now doing my Masters via distance and part-time through the Igeon collaboration programme offered by Lund University in Sweden and the University of Twente in the Netherlands. “GIS for environmental modelling and natural resource management”. With this degree and my accumulated experience working with New Zealand government and my experience as a consultant for ecological health monitoring in Southeast Asia, I want to connect technology, science and last but not least people. Apart from being equipped with communication methods, I want to establish a wider network across the globe with all other participants. I want to learn from and with others. I enjoy being outdoors, dancing Salsa, playing the piano and am always up for board games and social gatherings.

Born and raised in Germany, I have been living and working in the UK for the past 10 years. I originally gained a BSc in International Business & Economics from the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg in 2009. My Master’s degree in Politics, Economics & Philosophy then took me to the University of York, UK. I have remained in the UK since and following completion of my PhD on socio-technical innovation for more sustainable urban transport (read: cycling) I now work as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Greenwich in London.

More recently I have also been getting stuck in with activism after joining the Extinction Rebellion campaign in autumn 2018. Doing so has profoundly shifted my perception on the opportunities open to me in terms of communicating with colleagues, students and other fellow human beings on issues of sustainability and the climate crisis. But it has also made me quite interested in reassessing the privileged role scientists and other experts are given vis-a-vis normal citizens and lay people in the political decision-making processes relating to sustainability and climate change challenges. As a science and risk communication scholar at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) my research focuses are on risk perception and public discourses on new and emerging sciences and technologies. As a science journalist and delegate to the European Union of Science Journalists´ Associations (EUSJA) I worked towards a common framework of ethical principles for research and innovation projects in the context of the EU project SATORI. My intrinsic motivation is deeply rooted in the cognition, that the current co-evolutionary pathway of the human enterprise and the ecosphere puts civilization at risk – fostering the need for successful sustainability transformations. These transformations comprise the further development of ethically responsible economic and societal systems that are more sustainable than current societies – that will not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Therefore PSS suits my capacity to co-create best available evidence-based knowledge and to engage in mutual exchange with peers across disciplines and borders – collaborating in order to achieve more sustainable societies.

Andrea studied Forestry in Chile, working mainly in topics related to biodiversity conservation and environmental education, acting as a mediator in the interface science-society, coordinating education programmes for different stakeholders, that involved forests ecologists. After studying a master in Human Development in Geneva, Switzerland, she moved to the Chilean Ministry of Education, inside the National Science Commission, coordinating a programme that involved universities, NGO´s and different societal actors via science education and science communication. Since 2015, she has worked in the scientific public engagement sector, first at ECSITE, the European Science Network of Science Centres and Museums and currently at EUSEA, the European Science Engagement Association. Most recently, she served as the vice president of marketing &communications for Earth Day Texas, a leading environmental nonprofit in Dallas. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Texas A&M University and an MBA degree from the University of Dallas.

Since transitioning to an academic career in 2017, Rosalynn has become an active researcher integrated in multiple research projects with professors within and outside of Texas Tech, thereby expanding her network and utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her research interests include science communications, public relations and corporate social advocacy. Specifically, she examines how science communicators use PR tofacilitate public understanding and engagement of science issues such as climate change, and most effectively impact public policy.

A native of Lima, Peru, she is passionate about environmental, health and sustainability issues that impact society. Through her education, cultural background, research pursuits and industry experiences, she is interested in collaborating on research and teaching projects that furtherbridge academia with industry.

is a researcher at the German Environment Agency (UBA) for German climate policy. After receiving his master’s degree in sustainability economics and managements in the beautiful city of Oldenburg in north-western Germany, in which he developed a new framework for sustainable development which connects the SDGs with the planetary boundaries, he worked for a MP in the field of energy policy. At the UBA, he is responsible for climate protection measures as well as projections due to EU reporting obligations. He is also a member of a working group of the European Commission trying to implement the Governance Regulation.

The main questions arising from his work is what science needs to do better to trigger transformation processes. Should science be neutral or an advocate for change?

has an interdisciplinary background in social sciences and is interested in human-nature interactions and environmental governance in different world regions. She has lived in Argentina, Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands and enjoys multicultural environments. Currently, she is doing a PhD in human geography at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany. In this context, she focusses on how environmental change influences human migration and vice versa in the Global South and applies various synthesis approaches to create a bigger trans-regional picture on the topic. Part of her motivation for participating in this year’s summer school is the high societal and political relevance of her research topic as well as the controversy surrounding it.

is an atmospheric chemistry PhD candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Mainz, Germany. In his work, Jake uses a range of computational modelling tools, from the molecular to the global scale, to study the impact of different types of air pollution. Specifically, he studies the chemical interactions taking place in the lung, as well as the long-range transport of pollutants in the atmosphere.

Jake obtained a BSc in Chemistry with Mathematics from University College London (UCL), and a MSc in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling from the University of Valencia (UV). Jake was born in the UK and has lived in the Falkland Islands, Spain and most recently in Germany.

is an ecologist and environmental expert. She got her PhD from Urban Forestry Program at Beijing Forestry University in China. She worked in Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, PRC. before she was awarded German Chancellor Fellowship/Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) for Green Cities Research. Her research areas are Ecosystem Services, Biodiversity Conservation and Sponge City. She has rich experience of interdisciplinary research on ecological and environmental issues. Currently she is senior researcher working in IOER on a project: Urban-Rural Assembly-- Managing inclusive transformation-to-sustainability processes at the urban-rural interface of the Huangyan-Taizhou region in China.
